How Cigars Could Complement Your Wellness Goals

A mere handful of days past, I found myself amidst a most surreal occurrence, if that would suffice to elucidate it. I was enveloped in genuine delight and unparalleled elation, akin to being an active participant in a distinguished “CIGAR Smoker of the Year” event in London, notwithstanding my physical presence merely within the confines of my living quarters in Athens.

The day after, the following thoughts crossed my mind that I would like to share:

In the pursuit of wellness, we often encounter advice that directs us away from certain habits or indulgences perceived as detrimental to our health. However, wellness isn’t solely about strict limitations; it’s about a holistic approach that encompasses both physical and mental well-being. Surprisingly, one such indulgence—cigars—may have a place within this broader concept of wellness, provided it’s approached in moderation and with mindfulness.

I do know that all of you Cigar Lovers, Aficionados, and Sommeliers out there…. already probably hate the “moderation” part but please bear with me…

Embracing Pleasure in Moderation

Again, if pleasure can also be in moderation…

Wellness isn’t about deprivation; it’s about balance and joy. Enjoyment and happiness play crucial roles in our overall well-being. Often, the things we enjoy bring a sense of fulfillment and relaxation, contributing positively to our mental health. For many, cigars represent a pleasurable pastime, offering moments of relaxation and contemplation.

Mindfulness in Moderation

Moderation is key. In the case of cigars, enjoying them in moderation can be akin to savoring a fine wine or gourmet meal. It’s about the experience, the relaxation, and the social aspect rather than excessive consumption.

The Art of Relaxation

Cigar smoking, when done mindfully, can be an opportunity for relaxation and mindfulness. It’s a moment to slow down, appreciate the flavours and aromas, and engage in contemplation. This act of deliberate, relaxed enjoyment can have positive effects on stress reduction and mental well-being.

Caveats and Considerations

While moderate cigar smoking may offer these potential benefits, it’s crucial to acknowledge the risks associated with tobacco use. Cigar smoking, like any form of tobacco consumption, presents health risks, including the possibility of addiction, increased risk of certain diseases, and adverse effects on respiratory health. These risks should be weighed carefully against any perceived benefits.

The Holistic Approach to Wellness

Wellness isn’t a one-size-fits-all paradigm. It’s about finding what works for you—physically, mentally, and emotionally. If the occasional cigar brings a sense of relaxation, joy, and social connection, it can complement your wellness goals, provided it’s a conscious and mindful choice within the larger spectrum of a healthy lifestyle.

As a corporate wellness coach, I have encountered some CEO’s who had a really “destroying” all-or-nothing approach. Either no cigars at all or one cigar after another, to compensate for the time lost in between… Nothing sustainable in the end.

So…

Embracing the things that bring us joy, like savoring a fine cigar or enjoying a glass of whisky (and not whiskey), can be part of our journey toward wellness. It’s about acknowledging that pleasure, in moderation, is a vital part of a fulfilling life. Yet, in this pursuit, let’s never underestimate the power of balance and moderation when it comes to our health goals. The key lies in cherishing these moments mindfully, understanding that our overall well-being is a mosaic crafted from choices that nourish both body and soul. So, let’s toast to life’s pleasures while honoring the importance of mindful indulgence on our path to a healthy and contented existence.

Remember (of course, I need to add this part as a healthcare practitioner) that before incorporating any habit, including cigar smoking, into your wellness routine, it’s wise to consult with healthcare professionals to understand the potential risks specific to your health profile.

Be well,

Charikleia
